All Living Things by the First Grade at Dan Emmett Elementary, January 2009

CHORUS:
What do we need, all living things? What do we need, all living things?
What do we need, all living things? What do we need, all living things?

We need air with oxygen that comes from the trees on the wind
Can’t hold it in your hand, but feel it on your face; It’s everywhere…. but not in outer         space
    CHORUS - 1 line only

We need food to help us grow so we can run and play ready, set, go
If you’re a bear or a busy bee, whatever you eat...gives you energy
    CHORUS - 1 line only

We need water clean and good to drink, the taste on your tongue keeps you in the         pink
If you’re a plant, you get it from the ground from rivers and rain…water’s all around
    CHORUS - 1 line only

We need shelter from too much sun;  ice and snow will make you numb
Home where it’s safe, it might be in the sea, in a den or a cave, your house or in a tree
    CHORUS

GRAVITY

Gravity gravity
    You should take it seriously
KEEPS YOUR FEET ON THE GROUND DON’T YOU AGREE?
That’s how it is with gravity

Walkin’ down the street with my good friend Joe
Talkin’ and laughin’ everywhere we go
A shoelace came undone and we both fell down
Our legs got tangled and we hit the ground
    Gravity gravity
    You should take it seriously
IT CAN MAKE YOU FALL AND SKIN YOUR KNEE
That’s how it is with gravity

Is the Christmas tree standing straight and tall?
Or will the cat up in there make it fall?
He’s playing with the branch and a ball so bright
Crash! It’s in pieces with a strand of lights
    Gravity gravity
    You should take it seriously
MAKES THE ORNAMENTS FALL OFF YOUR TREE
That’s how it is with gravity

We’re in outer space goin’ on a trip
Riding in our favorite rocket ship
With our books and games, food and water too
Floating around us going to the moon
    (with) NO gravity NO gravity
    We take it so seriously
    WEIGHTLESSNESS MAKES US FEEL FREE
That’s how it is with NO gravity

Animals in Ohio by the Second Grade at Dan Emmett Elementary, January 2009

CHORUS:
Animals in Ohio live in different ways
Some fly through trees, some swim in water
And some in tall grasses do graze
And that’s the way they spend their days

Red flash in white snow, some feathers of brown
Splash in shallow water a cheery cheery sound
Calls back and forth from strong bright beaks
Crest on the top of the head, living on sunflower seeds
    CHORUS
Leaping in the sun, swimming swiftly downstream
Rainbow scales that sparkle pink yellow and green
Feasting on dragonflies, in a river that’s clear
Gills open and close breathing from water the air
    CHORUS
Jumping looking for food, corn apples and flowers
Running into the road, leaping for hours
Spotted brown and white fur, white tails held high
Curled up in the leaves, antlers that reach to the sky

It’s Messy at the Melting Point
by The Fourth Grade at Dan Emmett Elementary, January 2009

CHORUS:
It’s messy at the melting point, yeah it’s messy at the melting point
    32 Fahrenheit or Zero Centigrade
Below you’re gonna get some snow, above it you get rain
But on the dot it will not disappoint
Oh it’s messy at the melting point
School is cancelled once again, hangin out with my friends
Goin up with my sled, wiping out I hit my head
Sliding down with frozen toes, now I have a runny nose
I wish I would have stayed in bed, I think I need some jam and bread!
    CHORUS
One day I built a big snowman, then sun began to spoil my plan
I watched as he began to shrink, it happened faster than you’d think
Icicles began to drip, I caught one on my fingertip
And there were puddles in  a blink, so much for the skating rink
    CHORUS
A hot day at the swimming pool, I was hoping to stay cool
Chilly winds began to blow, I thought it was about to snow
At first it rained, then there was hail, that’s when I began to wail
Dark clouds began to show, I knew that it was time to go

It’s messy at the freezing point, yeah it’s messy at the freezing point
    32 Fahrenheit or Zero Centigrade
Below you’re gonna get some snow, above it you get rain
But on the dot it will not disappoint
Oh it’s messy at the freezing point

It’s messy at the melting point, yeah it’s messy at the melting point
    32 Fahrenheit or Zero Centigrade
Below you’re gonna get some snow, above it you get rain
But on the dot it will not disappoint
Oh it’s messy at the melting point

If You’re An Animal by Kindergarten Classes at Dan Emmett Elementary, January 2009

If you’re an owl you sit in a tree and hoot
If your antlers are soft and huge, you’re a moose
If you’re a fish, you have a tail and fins to swim
Unless you’re a snake with smooth leathery skin
    CHORUS:
Everything comes in different sizes, many shapes and colors too
Some run or swim, and others fly it all depends on what they need to do
If you spray nasty stuff, there’s no doubt that you’re a skunk
If you’re an elephant, you have tusks and a loooong trunk
If you’re a raccoon, around your eyes there is a mask
If you’re a cheetah, you have spots and run fast
    CHORUS

Lyrics

If you’re bumpy and green and hop you might be a frog
If you’re furry and brown and bark, then you’re my dog
If you purr and meow, I’ll chase you Miss Kitty Cat
But I won’t if you fly at night and eat bugs, cause you might be a bat
    CHORUS
A panda is what you are if you chew bamboo
And if you’re a cown, you make milk and go “moo”
An eagle can fly because of his feathered wings
And you say “ouch” to a bee because it stings

The Cycle of Life by The Third Grade at Dan Emmett Elementary, January 2009

CHORUS:
What do you look like when you’re born?
Can you walk or talk or sing?
We all change as we go through life
    There’s a cycle for everything!

An egg with a dot in the middle
Then a tadpole with a tail
The tail goes in, the legs come out
Now a frog is jumping all about!
    CHORUS

Plant a seed in soil, give it water
With air and sun it sprouts
Down go the roots and the stem pops up
Next thing you know the tree’s all grown up!
    CHORUS

A baby  of a special kind of mammal
Hatches from an oval egg
Not quite a beaver, not glamorous
Not quite a duck, it’s a platypus!

The Three New R’s by the Fifth Grade at Dan Emmett Elementary, January 2009

There used to be something in school, the 3 R’s were the rule
Reading, writing and ‘rithmetic, if you learned them, you were pretty cool
Times have changed we can’t refuse to reduce recycle and reuse
Saving the earth we’re all about, the three new R’s are what we shout:
Reduce, recycle, reuse!   Reduce, recycle, reuse!
Turn down your thermostat, walk more, drive less and use less gas
    Reduce, recycle, reuse!

So many things we can reuse, so the earth we will not lose
Turn off the light don’t blow a fuse, or we’ll be stuck singing the blues
Turn a pop bottle into a shirt, don’t leave your tires in the dirt
We all must stay alert, or it is the earth that will be hurt
    CHORUS
We use so much paper in this school, lots of homework is the rule
All the trees will think we’re cool, so recycle, don’t be a fool!
Throwing that can in the trash, we miss out on a mound of cash
To the recycling center we can dash, and save the earth in a flash
    CHORUS
    Ending Chorus:
Reduce, recycle, reuse!  Reduce, recycle, reuse!
Come along and join our group, Buy recycled, close the loop
An offer that you can’t refuse, Number 1 on the list of your to-do’s
Reduce, recycle, reuse!  Reduce, recycle, reuse!
An offer that you can’t refuse...Reduce, recycle, reuse!
