Story

While driving along Interstate 71 north of Columbus, Ohio, I saw a man on horseback off to my right.  When I looked back he was gone.  I wondered if he was ever really there??

Lyrics

COWBOY ON THE HIGHWAY   by Sarah Goslee Reed

She told him stories of the buffalo
She took him there to see them now they are no more ooh ooh ooh
She saw them in the corner of her eye
She saw him too then he drifted off a cloud in the sky

    CHORUS:

She saw a cowboy on the highway
She said there's no boy goin' my way

She was a dancer in the wind
Following dreams till they'd turn 'round and chase her back again
She saw him in the shadow of moonlight
By the river up against a tree or was it a trick of night

    REPEAT CHORUS

    BRIDGE:

Wind in the river, river in the wind
    Water rushin' to the sea
Wind in the river, river in the wind
Voices echoing, voices echoing, voices echoing

What became of her we do not know
Like the others she went the way of the buffalo ooh ooh ooh

REPEAT CHORUS

Story

I was inspired by a winter's night and a huge ring around the moon - the biggest and only one I have ever seen!  This song has been used by several elementary schools in their Christmas music programs - I love having the kids singing it with me!

Lyrics

RING AROUND THE MOON

Chorus:
There’s a ring around the moon and it’s hazy
A ring around the moon so bright
When the night is cold you need a hand to hold
There’s a ring around the moon tonight

Cold wind on my neck but it’s warm inside
Draggin’ firewood in, I’ve got a glass of wine
With my softest jeans and baggy sweater on
And someone special on my mind

There’s a ring around the moon and it’s hazy
A ring around the moon so bright
When the night is cold you need a hand to hold
There’s a ring around the moon tonight

Time to get buried underneath some snow
Stores shut down, cars won’t go
Tramp thru drifts after dark
Knowing the fire’s burning back home

Bridge:

Winter’s coming on, humming like a song
Soup is in the pot and I’m thankful that we’ve got...

There’s a ring around the moon and it’s hazy
A ring around the moon so bright
When the night is cold you need a hand to hold
There’s a ring around the moon tonight

Verse for East School, Wiggin Street School and Pleasant Street School (use in place of the first verse)
Holly berries bursting red, the leaves bright green
Birds and squirrels scamper through the woodland scene
And a doe’s big brown eyes
Stare at me curiously

Story

I read a story once ... a girl and her mother were walking on the beach. The girl asked her mother how to hold on to her true love.  The mother told her to pick up two handfuls of sand, to hold one loosely and to squeeze the other tight.  It is true - if you try too hard to hold the sand, you end up with less.

Lyrics

LOVE IS LIKE SAND

Love is like time pouring thru the hourglass
Passin you by when it’s your turn to play
Love is like sand slipping thru your fingers
The tighter you grab it the more it slips away

We used to walk in step with each other,
We used to talk so the other could hear
Now we’re walking in two different strides
The distance is so deep and wide
Feels like one of us might disappear

We used to laugh, we used to poke fun
Fun at each other, never seeking to care
Now we’re pointing fingers causing pain
Can we learn to smile again
Do we still have something to share?

Love is like time pouring thru the hourglass
Passin you by when it’s your turn to play
Love is like sand slipping thru your fingers
The tighter you grab it the more it slips away

We used to have common ground to stand on
Now we’re two islands drifting apart
Have storm winds blown us out of reach
Washed away the sand under our feet
Left us howling in the dark?

Love is like time pouring thru the hourglass
Passin you by when it’s your turn to play
Love is like sand slipping thru your fingers
The tighter you grab it the more it slips away

Story

A story over heard in a bar where I was singing...this was how the teller of the story described his method of getting over anything bad that happens:

1.Find a rock - hold it in your hand

2.Squeeze really hard (till all negative feelings, sadness, anger etc. are transferred to the rock)

3.Throw it far far away

4.Sigh.....feel better!

Lyrics

TAKE THIS ROCK  by  SARAH GOSLEE REED

Days are long and you are weary
From your trials and your stress
And the people you see daily
Leave you wanting more not less
There is anger and frustration
That is growing deep inside
It will lead to confrontation
That you can't escape or hide

CHORUS:
Take this rock in your fingers
Work the anger from your heart
Throw it off into the distance
And from your troubles part

When your sorrow is a fountain
For the love that's gone away
Better days you would be countin'
If you could only break away

CHORUS:
Take this rock in your fingers
Work the sadness from your heart
Throw it off into the distance
And from your troubles part

Take this rock in your fingers
Work the anger from your heart
Throw it off into the distance
And from your troubles part
And from your troubles part

For my friends in my birthday group - love you all!!

Lyrics

THE GATHERING

They sit around a table filled with laughter lunch and tears
They come here every month or so it’s been this way for years
The faces change but not the look that’s shining in their eyes
They’re celebrating life and change and time it mystifies

The years go round and circle thru this lasting group of firends
But no one’s counting and their view of happiness depends
    On this gathering of friends

Out come the presents brightly wrapped for the one they’re toasting today
There’s even cake and candles for it’s her birthday
They eagerly await to see who’s found the funniest card
They all agree it’s the best of ways for another year to start

The years go round and circle thru this lasting group of firends
But no one’s counting and their view of happiness depends
    On this gathering of friends

And when an hour or two has passed they know it’s time to adjourn
They’re tentatively making plans for their return

The years go round and circle thru this lasting group of firends
But no one’s counting and their view of happiness depends
    On this gathering of friends

A song for my daughter...when she was 12...

Lyrics

TIMING by Sarah Goslee Reed

My little girl called to me one night, as she got into bed,
There were tears in her blue eyes and on the pillow she laid her head
And with a sigh she said, "I just want the boys to like me"
"They will soon," came my reply, "The secret is in the timing."

CHORUS:
"You wait for them, they wait for you
It may unfold the way you want it to
It's stars it's luck, it's a miracle,
It's what life and love is all about,"
I said to my little girl.

I remember feeling much like you at the age of eleven,
Dancing with a boy I knew, he was just barely seven-
Teen, we had so much to say, though there was not much on our minds.
We both went our different ways, the secret was in the timing.

CHORUS

And as the years roll on, may there be someone to remind you,
That your head may have it wrong, your heart should guide you...

There will be so many times, love will make you wonder,
Upon the wind did you hear chimes, or was it thunder?
What the future holds depends, dark skies but with stars shining;
Sometimes lovers, sometimes friends, the secret will be in the timing.

CHORUS

Ahhhh ..... Spring!!

Lyrics

JOURNEY
by Sarah Goslee Reed

The wind blew through my hair today
Clean and warm it came my way
Took winter's chill as it went through
But best of all it brought me you

Calling me with arms outstretched
On fingers born out of the west
Held my shoulders, brushed my face
And carried me to another place...

Have you needed me all these years
The way that I have needed you
Can it really be these few days
    Since we were introduced

Hand in hand we sailed that wind
And sang of things known from within
We breathed the clouds and drank with care
The secrets told upon that air

Have you needed me all these years
The way that I have needed you
Can it really be these few days
    Since we were introduced

The wind blew through my hair today
Clean and warm it came my way
Took winter's chill as it went through
But best of all it brought me you
